Db2 Basics: Autonomic Features

Ian Bjorhovde, Lead Db2 DBA and Delivery Manager

IBM has added many features to Db2 over the years to help DBAs manage their databases. These include automatic maintenance, the self tuning memory manager, and more. This session reviews the various autonomic features present in Db2: what they are, how to monitor them, and how to control their actions.


Speaker Bios:

Mike Springgay is the Db2 Warehouse Architect focused on the common engine components. Prior to that he was responsible for extending Db2's SQL compatibility features, routine infrastructure and client server connectivity.

Dale McInnis is a Certified Executive Technical Sales Specialist from the IBM Toronto Canada Lab. He has a B.Sc.(CS) from the University of New Brunswick and a Masters of Engineering(M.Eng) from the University of Toronto. Dale joined IBM in 1988 and worked in the DB2 development team from 1992 - 2014. Dale's area of expertise includes DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows Kernel development, where he led teams that designed the current backup and recovery architecture and other key high availability and disaster recovery technologies. More recently he has expanded his knowledge to include RedHat Open Shift, Kubernetes, Docker and the containerization of applications. He has obtained eleven (11) patents in database resiliency. Dale is a popular speaker at the International DB2 Users Groups (IDUG) conferences worldwide, as well as DB2 Regional Users Groups and IBM's Technical conferences. In 2018, Dale was appointed to the IDUG Speaker’s Hall of Fame for being awarded best overall presentation at an IDUG conference several times. His expertise in the area DB2 resiliency and is well known in the information technology industry. Dale spent 10 months as the IBM Cloud Data Services Chief Availability Architect, and Dale is now on the North American Data and AI Technical Sales team. Dale has recently been appointed to IBM’s Academy of Technology (an action-oriented society of IBM's leading thinkers and problem solvers).

Ian Bjorhovde is the Lead Db2 DBA and Delivery Manager for XTIVIA, and is based in Phoenix, Arizona. He has spent over 20 years as a consultant developing and supporting large and small Db2 databases for clients in many different industries. Ian is an IBM Gold Consultant and IBM Champion. He volunteers for the International DB2 Users Group and holds numerous DB2 certifications, and has presented at many RUG, IDUG and IBM conferences around the world.
